Race Preview

Coverage of the HYROX North American Championships Elite 15 will begin at 6:20 pm EST. The women will go first, followed by the men.

Elite 15 Women

Get ready for another battle between Lauren Weeks and Meg Jacoby. These two have been in a league of their own in just about every HYROX race they’ve entered over the past two years. Lauren just took Meg’s world record away from her at HYROX Vienna a few weeks ago, so she might be looking to reclaim her record.

Linda Meier has already qualified for World Championships as well, but she’s been on a tear this year, putting up some impressive times. Look for her to try and hang with Meg & Lauren up front, along with Viola Oberländer, who’s been one of the most consistent HYROX athletes we’ve seen in the sport.

Other athletes looking to grab one of the remaining qualifying spots for Nice are:

  • Kris Rugloski – She’s a former HYROX World Champion, so never count her out, but HYROX hasn’t been as big a priority for her as some of the other women in this race.
  • Camilla Massa – She had a really tough race in Vienna but is determined to come back with a bang.
  • Alandra Greenlee – She’s consistently been in the top 3-5 in most HYROX and DEKA events she’s entered.
  • Lauren Griffith – Quickly solidifying herself as a perennial hybrid athlete, with an amazing showing at last year’s DEKA World Championships across all 3 events (DEKA FIT, DEKA MILE, and DEKA STRONG)

The following women have turned down their invitation and will not be racing at the HYROX North American Championships this year:

Elite 15 Men

Look for Ryan Kent & Rich Ryan to make up for their lackluster performances in Vienna. Kent has already qualified for Worlds, but I don’t think he’s taking this race any less serious. And Rich is fighting for a spot at Worlds so I expect him to sell out.

Pelayo is having a great year, and we expect to see him up near the front as well. Dylan Scott is coming off an impressive 55:34 performance at HYROX Fort Lauderdale last weekend, while also racing on a relay team. He’s no stranger to high volume so I’m confident he will recover in time and his confident will be flying high this weekend.

Other athletes looking to grab one of the remaining qualifying spots for Nice are:

  • David Magida – A former North American HYROX Champ
  • James Kelly – I don’t see James winning this race, but a top 4-5 finish is within reach.
  • Colin Stiefer – Ran a 58:14 at HYROX Chicago in November last year
  • Florian Gast – 7th in the World last year
  • Lukas Storath – Former world record holder

The following men have all turned down their invitation and will not be racing at the HYROX North American Championships this year:

  • Hunter McIntyre – He’s already qualified for World Championships and that’s his top priority.
  • Rylan Schadegg – He was (maybe still is) in Dubai. He competed at the Gov Games.
  • Alexander Roncevic – Already qualified for WC.
  • Beau Wills – Already qualified for WC.
  • Tim Wenisch – Already qualified for WC.
  • Tomas Tvrdik – Already qualified for WC.
  • Michael Sandbach – Already qualified for WC.
  • Tobias Lautwein
  • Jonathon Wynn – Still affected by a recent sickness (see his post here)
  • Tom Hogan
  • Peter Schiller
  • Anass Zouhry

Several of these athletes reside outside the United States and have already qualified for the World Championships in Nice, France in June, so there isn’t much incentive for them to make the trip.

HYROX GORUCK Division

Jarrett Newby looks to continue his momentum after recently setting a new world record for fastest half marathon with a 100lbs ruck.

Race Setup

It will be a 3-lap running course. We believe HYROX will use all the same Centr equipment that it previewed last weekend in Fort Lauderdale.

Women’s Elite 15 Race

Congrats to Lauren Griffith who was the only athlete to qualify for World Championships (WC) at this race. She finished 5th in 1:04:05.

The top 4 athletes already qualified for WC and roll downs only go to the fifth overall place.

Lauren Weeks took the win again, but this time it wasn’t Meg Jacoby behind her. Linda Meier had an incredible race and finished in second. Jacoby rounded out the podium, and Vivian Tafuto ran an well-balanced race to finish in 4th.

  1. Lauren Weeks – 1:01:20 – $6,000
  2. Linda Meier – 1:02:31 – $4,000
  3. Meg Jacoby – 1:02:37 – $2,500

Men’s Elite 15 Race

The men’s race saw Dylan Scott basically lead from start to finish. He took all the momentum he built up from Fort Lauderdale last weekend, and unleashed another incredible performance, winning by just over 90 seconds in 56:37.

He finished in style with a forward roll and some finger guns:

Graham Halliday had an impressive come-from-behind performance on the wall balls to surprise everyone when he crossed the line in second with a time of 58:08.

Rich Ryan was fighting with Colin Stiefer for what we thought would be the second spot, but it ended up being a fight for third. Colin had a rough go with the wall balls, which is typically a strength for him, and Rich crossed the line in third with a time of 58:16.

Ryan Kent actually snuck into 4th place, and Stiefer dropped to 5th.

Congratulations to Dylan, Graham, and Rich for qualifying for World Championships! 🎉

Men’s GORUCK Division

The race was neck and neck from almost start to finish, with Jarrett Newby & Dylan Scott fighting it out for the top spot. Newby edged out Scott by 2 seconds, taking the win in 1:00:47. It was an exciting race for 3rd as well, with Eric Williams finishing 3 seconds ahead of Grady Jackson to take the third podium spot with a time of 1:02:10.

  1. Jarrett Newby – 1:00:47 – $3,000
  2. Dylan Scott – 1:00:49 – $1,500
  3. Eric Williams – 1:02:10 – $500

Women’s GORUCK Division

For the second day in a row, it was the Lauren Weeks show. She finished in first, less than a minute slower than her time from last night without a weight vest.

Vivian Tafuto put up a solid fight, staying within a minute of Lauren for most of the race. Lauren just had too much and couldn’t be caught.

Lauren Rantala held off Camilla Massa to round out the podium with a time of 1:08:05.

  1. Lauren Weeks – 1:02:11 – $3,000
  2. Vivian Tafuto – 1:03:32 – $1,500
  3. Lauren Rantala – 1:08:05 – $500

Incorrect Sled Weight

Almost a week after the event, Hybrid Fitness Media took to Instagram to mention that the sled weights for some women were incorrect. It looks like it affected most (if not all) of the women’s open division, and possibly some of the men as well.

This was the second time using the new Centr equipment, although from those who were in Fort Lauderdale two weekends before, it seems they got it correct there. Mistakes happen, and I’m sure it wasn’t intentional, but that’s a pretty big oversight. And it’s quite unfortunate to those whom were affected negatively by pushing and/or pulling extra weight.
