Ryan Kent of the Mile Hybrid Show came up with a new hybrid-style event. He dubbed it the Mile Hybrid Invitational. He first sent it to his co-host, Rich Ryan, asking Rich how long he thought it’d take him to complete. Rich replied, “20 seconds faster than you, no matter what.”
The Mile Hybrid Invitational starts with a station (instead of a run, like HYROX & DEKA FIT). It also finishes with a run, which is what many athletes in the hybrid space are in favor of. However, it doesn’t have running in between each station. It alternates between a heavier station and a more cardio focused station.
The Mile Hybrid Invitational Workout
The Mile Hybrid Invitational workout is:
20 dumbbell thrusters (50/35)
500m row
20 deadlifts (275/185)
500m SkiErg
20 wall balls (30/20)
25 cal Assault Bike
100m farmer’s carry (100/70)
400m run
The weight’s listed are for men/women.
- Women use 35# dumbbells for the thrusters, a 185# deadlift, a 20# wall ball, and 70# dumbbells for the farmer’s carry.
- Men use 50# dumbbells for the thrusters, a 275# deadlift, a 30# wall ball, and 100# dumbbells for the farmer’s carry.
- Both men & women perform the same distance & calories on the cardio machines.
What is a good time?
Rich estimated he’d finish around 11:30. Ryan thinks sub-11 is possible for top-end athletes.
Where do you think you’d finish?
Let us know in the comments in you give this a try.
Attracting Different Athletes
HYROX & DEKA FIT both include far more running than this event. HYROX has 8k of total running and DEKA FIT has 5k. While the Mile Hybrid Invitational has one cardio station for every heavier movement, there is only a single 400m run.
This could attract athletes from outside the typical HYROX/DEKA bubble. You might see CrossFit athletes do really well at this event. It’s also possible for bigger, stronger athletes to outperform some of the lighter athletes that we see who come into the hybrid space from a pure running background.
Could an elite 5k, 10k, or half marathoner even deadlift 275/185? Would they be able to move the dumbbells for the farmer’s carry?
You’re Up
There is no official time or place for the Mile Hybrid Invitational. As of now, it’s a virtual event we can all do on our own. Tag Ryan & Rich on Instagram if you give it a go. Let the world know how you did. Use the hashtag #milehybridinvitational.
