New HYROX Turf Debuting at 2025 World Championships in Chicago

The new official competition turf for HYROX has been tested over 200k times for durability. Will we see faster or slower sled times when it debuts?

HYROX has just announced they’ll be using a new turf at all global events, starting with the 2025 HYROX World Championships in Chicago, USA. The Centr x HYROX Perform Turf is now the official competition turf of HYROX.

Gone are the days where Americans complain about their HYROX time and blame it on slow HYROX sled carpets. Every single HYROX race in the 2025/26 season will use the same turf, and the same sleds, both provided by Centr.

In the official announcement, HYROX Director of Sport, Mintra Tilly, had this to say:

“We are now creating individual athletic experiences for hundreds of thousands of athletes in competitions and millions in training. We want to ensure that each of those experiences reflects our obsession with performance and creating a surface for the sleds which has been engineered from the ground up to standardise our athletes’ experience has been a key strategic focus for us.”

Sled Turf History

Remind Me: The HYROX sled carpet has been a point of discussion for several years now. Athletes say that the sled push & sled pull feel different at different venues, especially when US races are compared to those in Europe. In the past, HYROX has used different equipment in each region of the world.

  • Starting in 2024, HYROX partnered with Centr to be their official equipment provider. Since then, all HYROX races have used the same Centr equipment, with the row & ski erg machines still provided by Concept2.

Now, in addition to standardized Centr sleds, HYROX will be using a new standardized turf, also provided by Centr.

In the official announcement on Instagram, HYROX said:

“We’re taking the race and training experience to the next level with the launch of the HYROX Perform Turf, built in collaboration with our global equipment partner, Centr. After intense testing and material tweaks, we’ve engineered a turf that delivers consistent, durable, and optimized sled push and pull conditions—matching the resistance of our previous setup while leveling up performance.”

Durability

HYROX & Centr promise the new turf is built to last. They have performed over 200,000 wear tests and ongoing durability checks to guarantee this turf can handle anything—from hardcore training sessions to race-day intensity.

Only time will tell just how durable the new HYROX turf is. Not only will it be used across the globe at over 100 HYROX events in 2025/26 and beyond…

Availability

The new turf will also be available in HYROX training clubs & affiliate gyms worldwide. Centr has not listed the turf for sale yet, but it will be available to the public soon.

They’ve obviously been testing it somewhere, and I’m sure there are a few gyms who have already been trying it out.

The Centr team had this to say about their new turf:

“The Centr x HYROX Perform Turf is the official turf used in HYROX competitions worldwide. This patent-pending design is specially engineered for optimal sled pulls and pushes and is constructed to withstand intense wear and tear.”

  • We’re not sure what an “optimal” sled push/pull is. This seems to contradict HYROX’s statement that it “matches the resistance of our previous setup.”
  • The turf will be available in multiple sizes & configurations to accommodate varying facility sizes & needs.

I suspect the new turf will rollout slowly to HYROX affiliate gyms. Many of them already have perfectly fine turf, and it’s a big investment to rip it up and install new turf in its place. But for newer gyms or those looking to upgrade their facility, this is an awesome opportunity to go all-in on HYROX training.

If you’re a HYROX training club, contact Centr to ask when you can get your hands on the new turf.

Training

Many HYROX athletes have suggested using more weight on your sled when training both the sled push & sled pull. This is due to the increased friction that the HYROX carpets provide over the turf that most gyms use. The sleds are simply easier to move on commercial gym turf.

Now if you find a HYROX training club with the official turf, you can be sure it’s the exact turf you’ll use on race day. No more adding weight and being surprised when you enter station 2. 👏

Will all HYROX sleds feel the exact same now?

Just because every event is using the same sleds & turf, it doesn’t mean they’ll all feel exactly the same. In the past, humidity inside the venue has likely affected the friction of the carpet. It’s unclear if humidity will be a factor with the new turf.

We should also keep in mind general wear & tear over time.

  • Some events are 4 days long, while others are a single day. Will the turf become more difficult or easier to move throughout a weekend? Likely not, but…
  • How will repeated HYROX sled pushes & pulls affect the turf over time? It will likely take years for any noticeable impact.

FAQ

Is the new HYROX turf what they’ve been using in the warm-up area?

There are rumors that the new Centr x HYROX turf is the same turf that HYROX has been installing for the warm-up area at many races, at least in the US. These have yet to be confirmed, but the sleds definitely move faster on the warm-up turf than they do on the carpets during the race.

  • Do you think the new turf is the same as the warm-up area?
  • Will the new turf make sled times faster or slower?
