Qualification

The HYROX World Championships are held once per year, and you must qualify to be invited to participate. The qualification rules have changed over the years. I’ll cover that below.

The World Championships currently invites the following divisions to participate:

  • Elite 15
  • Pro Doubles
  • Pro (age groups from 16-59)
  • Open (age groups from 60 onwards)
  • Doubles (age groups from 60 onwards)
  • Elite Relay (mixed teams of 4 representing their country)

The qualification rules are unique, depending on which category you fall into.

Elite 15 Qualification

In 2019, HYROX’s first season, you qualified for World Championships if you had one of the fastest times overall. You could qualify from any one of the season’s 9 races.

In 2020, the official HYROX World Championship was cancelled due to COVID-19, but a unique, invite-only event was held in Hamburg, Germany. HYROX invited the 5 men & 5 women with the fastest times of the year, along with one wild card in each gender.

From 2021-2023, the top 3 men & women from the European Championships and the top 3 from the U.S. Championships won an automatic bid to the World Championship. The remaining slots (anywhere from 10-20 total athletes) were awarded to the fastest times of the season.

In 2024 & 2025, the qualification system was changed once again. Now you must finish in the top 3 in an Elite 15 race at one of 4 “majors” that are held throughout the year. You must also qualify to race in the Elite 15 at a major, which we’ll cover below. For those already qualified from a previous major, spots will roll down to the next in line, until 3 spots are awarded for that race. (In 2024, spots only rolled down to 5th place.)

The Elite 15 World Championship races in these years was always capped at 15 athletes. Any remaining slots were awarded to top finishers at either one or two last chance qualifier (LCQ) events held near the end of the season, after the 4 majors.

2024 last chance qualifier events:

  • Saturday, April 13, 2024 โ€“ Cologne, Germany
    • Men: 1 spot
    • Women: 3 spots
  • Saturday, May 19, 2024 โ€“ Anaheim, CA, USA
    • Men: 2 spots
    • Women: 4 spots

2025 last chance qualifier event:

  • Saturday, April 26, 2025 โ€“ Barcelona, Spain
    • In 2025, there are 3 spots available for each the men & women

To learn more about all LCQ events, check out our guide to HYROX last chance qualifiers.

Pro Doubles Elite 15 Qualification

The Pro Doubles Elite 15 system debuted in the 2024/25 season, and it was first seen at World Championships in 2025. Qualification for the Pro Doubles category is simple.

The top 3 male & female teams from each of the following 5 races will qualify for World Championships:

  • HYROX Melbourne โ€“ December 14-15, 2024
  • HYROX Houston โ€“ March 15-16, 2025
  • HYROX Paris โ€“ April 18-19, 2025
  • HYROX Miami โ€“ April 19, 2025
  • HYROX London โ€“ May 3, 2025

* There is no mixed doubles category for Pro Doubles; only male & female categories.

See who has already qualified for Elite 15 Pro Doubles โ†’

Age Group Qualification

In 2025, World Championship qualification spots were awarded at most events, and the number of spots correlated to the total number of participants at the event. The more athletes that raced, the more spots were awarded.

Elite Relay

The Elite Relay race was added in 2024. HYROX selected one athlete from each country to be the team captain, and they would recruit 3 more athletes from their country to join their team.

  • All teams consisted of 2 men & 2 women
  • All athletes must be a citizen of the country they are representing
  • Standard HYROX relay rules apply

Now let’s get into the HYROX World Championship events, year by year.

2020

There were 11 total races this season, 4 of which took place in major cities in the U.S. (Miami, Dallas, New York, Chicago). But because of COVID-19, the season was cut short, and the 2020 HYROX World Championship only featured 6 athletes from each gender.

HYROX invited the 5 men & women with the top times of the year to Hamburg, Germany on November 28th, 2020, as well as 1 wild card invitation to an athlete of their choice. HYROX chose to invite two CrossFit athletesโ€”2013 CrossFit Games champion, Sam Briggs, and long-time CrossFitter Adam Klink, who recently squatted 500lbs and ran a sub-5 minute mile in the same day.

  • The race was also run on Assault AirRunners instead of the usual multiple laps around an indoor running track
  • Only 4 of the 6 women finished the race

Here are the final results of the 2020 HYROX World Championship:

  • Hunter McIntyre was the 2020 men’s champion with a time of 1:00:04
  • Lauren Weeks was the 2020 women’s champion with a time of 1:09:47
